Therma-Tru Sliding & Patio Doors: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Therma-Tru-compatible sliding and patio door parts across Fort Lauderdale, with most rollers, handles, and lock sets running $145 to $420 installed depending on your door’s series and hardware finish. If your door drags, sticks, or won’t latch, you’re usually looking at a one-day fix once the right part is in hand. Most owners discover the failure the same way: the door that used to glide with two fingers now takes a shoulder, or the latch that clicked solid for fifteen years suddenly needs to be lifted and jiggled to catch.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To
Therma-Tru builds sliding patio doors under a few distinct lines, and the parts are not always interchangeable between them. The Classic-Craft and Fiber-Classic patio doors use a different roller assembly than the Tru-Defense impact-rated line, which gets a beefier stainless steel roller carriage rated for the heavier laminated glass. The Slim-Line series, common in mid-2000s Florida homes, has a narrower stile profile that takes a smaller edge-mount roller, not the face-mount style found on newer units.
To identify what you have, look for a white Therma-Tru label on the door’s edge or top rail. If that’s gone, measure the visible stile width: 2-1/2 inches or less usually means Slim-Line, 3-1/4 to 4-1/2 inches points to Classic-Craft or Tru-Defense. For hardware, OEM Therma-Tru parts match the original screw hole pattern and finish, but quality aftermarket equivalents from the same suppliers they private-label often cost 30 to 40 percent less with identical function. We keep both on hand and will tell you the honest tradeoff, which most of the time is none.
Signs Your Therma-Tru Sliding & Patio Door Is Failing
- The door drags or needs a running start to move. Roller bearings wear out, especially in Fort Lauderdale where sand and salt air work into the tracks. Once the nylon wheel flat-spots or the bearing seizes, the door rides on the housing and scores the track.
- The handle flops or won’t retract the latch. Internal spring clips inside Therma-Tru mortise handles are the usual culprit. The handle still looks fine from outside, but the mechanism inside has lost tension.
- The door won’t stay locked, or the key turns without catching. The lock cylinder tailpiece wears down against the latch body. On coastal Fort Lauderdale homes, corrosion accelerates this to a two-to-three year lifespan instead of the typical five to seven.
- You can see daylight through the door’s edge or feel a draft. Weatherstripping compress almost never fails this badly alone. Usually the panel has sagged off its rollers, or the frame has settled, and now the astragal no longer compresses the weatherstrip.
- The door is hard to lock from the inside but fine from outside. The panel has shifted slightly out of square relative to the frame. The fix is roller adjustment or replacement, not a new lock, which surprises most people.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For Fort Lauderdale homes, here’s what we quote and what you can expect.
- Roller replacement (both panels): $145 to $260 installed, including adjustment to square the panel in the frame.
- Handle and latch set: $180 to $320 installed, depending on finish and whether you want a keyed lock or a thumb-turn only.
- Full hardware package (rollers, handle, latch, keepers): $340 to $480 installed, usually a same-day job.
- Weatherstripping and track cleaning/re-alignment: $95 to $180, typically done alongside roller work.
The range comes down to your door’s series, the hardware finish, and whether the existing track has been damaged by running on dead rollers. Every quote is a written line-item price before we touch the door, and the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise covering parts and labor for a full year.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: run a vacuum along the bottom track, look for visible flat spots on roller wheels, and test whether the handle retracts the latch fully when you pull up. What you shouldn’t do is pull a sliding door panel out yourself. A Therma-Tru patio door panel in glass weighs between 120 and 220 pounds depending on size and impact rating, and once it’s off the track it wants to tip. We’ve seen cracked glass, bent frames, and one crushed toe from DIY panel removal in Fort Lauderdale. The risk isn’t worth the two-hour labor charge you’d save. If you’ve confirmed the rollers are shot or the latch is gone, call us at (754) 354-1396 and we’ll bring the right part the first time.
FAQs
Rollers typically last 7 to 12 years in Fort Lauderdale’s climate, but homes within a mile of the Intracoastal often see failures in 5 to 7 years due to the salt air. Handles and latches follow a similar pattern, with keyed cylinders failing first at around 3 to 5 years in coastal zones.
Rollers cannot be meaningfully repaired, only replaced, because the internal bearing is sealed. Handles can sometimes be rebuilt with a new spring clip, but since the clip kit costs nearly as much as the handle assembly, replacement is usually the better call. We’ll tell you which applies when we see the part.
Most roller and hardware replacements run 60 to 90 minutes. If the track needs cleaning, re-alignment, or a new weatherstrip set, plan on two hours. We’ll give you a live arrival time and send before-and-after photos, so you can see exactly what we did.
We keep the most common Therma-Tru roller assemblies, handles, and lock sets on our trucks for Classic-Craft, Slim-Line, and Tru-Defense series doors. Uncommon finishes or discontinued models may take 3 to 5 days to source. When a part is backordered, we tell you on the first call, not after we’ve taken the door apart. Sean Mackey has been doing this long enough to know that a door left on the ground overnight is a door nobody wants to deal with.
Ready to get your Therma-Tru sliding door working right? Call Juniper Windows & Doors Fort Lauderdale at (754) 354-1396 for a written quote before anything gets taken apart. We also stock parts for PGT, CGI, and CWS doors if you have a mixed house. If I wouldn’t put it on my own house, I’m not recommending it for yours.
